Questions people ask at the beginning
The ones that feel too basic to ask out loud, answered without condescension.
None of these are beginner questions in any embarrassing sense. Several of them are still being worked on by people who have been at this for decades.
Do I have to believe everything before I can start?
No. The people who followed Jesus most closely spent three years confused, and one of them asked for physical evidence after the resurrection and was given it rather than rebuked. Faith in Scripture looks more like walking towards something than arriving certain.
Do I need to go to church?
You do not need to in order to begin, and it is difficult to sustain this alone indefinitely. Christianity is stubbornly communal, and most of the New Testament was written to groups rather than individuals. Visiting somewhere is a reasonable early step, and leaving if it is not right is also reasonable.
What if I have done something I think is unforgivable?
The first Christian missionary had been present at an execution he approved of. That is not offered as a trick; it is the record. If there is a category of person excluded on the basis of history, Scripture does not seem to know about it.
How do I know if I am doing it right?
There is no scoring. If you are reading Scripture occasionally and speaking honestly to God, you are doing the thing. Consistency is worth more than intensity, and most spiritual growth is invisible while it is happening.
What if I stop believing later?
Many people go through periods where it is thin or absent. Scripture contains those seasons rather than editing them out, and Psalm 88 in particular ends without resolution. Doubt is not an exit.
