What Christians mean by saved
One of the most used words in the church, explained from scratch.
Saved implies a danger, and it is fair to ask what the danger is supposed to be. The Christian answer is not primarily about the afterlife. It is that something has gone wrong between people and God, that it runs through everyone, and that it is not the kind of thing that can be repaired from our side.
Romans 3:23KJV
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
All is a levelling word. It removes the ranking that religion is usually accused of creating, and it means the good and the disreputable are in the same position rather than at different ends of a queue.

Romans 5:8KJV
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
While we were still sinners. The timing is the point.
The order is worth noticing. Not once we had improved, and not on condition of improving. Christians believe Jesus took the consequence himself, and that this is what the cross was for.
How it is received
Ephesians 2:8–9KJV
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
A gift, and specifically not a wage. That distinction is the difference between Christianity and a system of merit, and losing it turns the whole thing back into an exam.
Does this mean behaviour does not matter?
No. It means behaviour is a response rather than a payment. The New Testament expects changed lives and is emphatic that the change follows the gift rather than earning it.
What if I am not sure I believe it?
Then you are in the position most people are in for a while, and there is no deadline. Reading a Gospel and being honest in prayer are both available to someone who has not decided.
